Reading #5

Is smell fundamentally different from other forms of art, in the way that they appeal to the senses? Is it different because it’s not a lasting interaction between the viewer and the piece?

Video Project

In class assignment:

FullSizeRender

Process and Ideation: I was very excited when I received my prompt for this project which was “natural”.  I really enjoy all elements of the the natural world, and it’s the thing that influences my art the most. I have also been making videos, in a very basic sense for about three years, so I tried a program that would render the best results. I had a lot of fun both filming and editing for this project. I used my brother’s Sony DSLR, and a JVC brand handheld camera. I used Final Cut Pro to edit the video.

Self Critique:

I was really looking forward to this project, and really wanted to push myself. Before this I had not used a DSLR to film footage nor had I ever formally edited it, but I was pleased how it turned out. My prompt was ‘natural’ so I decided to focus on one of my passions, which is exploring and being in nature. I wanted to represent the word in its most basic form, and use elements of photography and cinematography while doing so. I really used this as an opportunity to familiarize myself with the medium in the formal sense, and I think I achieved that. I am very pleased with the visuals, but I wish I would have thought and understood the part that the audio played in the final product better. I believe this was a successful piece and I look forward to bettering my skills in this medium.
